Tumanguya — “the very old man” — is the Northern Paiute / Shoshoni
name for the peak, older than the 1864 survey that renamed it after
Josiah Whitney. It reaches us mostly through settler records, and
sources disagree on which language it comes from. A 2023 petition to
make it the official name was declined; the maps still say Whitney.
I’ll use Tumanguya anyway.
